“The smell of good baking is like the sound of lightly flowing water, is indescribable in its evocation of innocence and delight.” – M.F.K. Fisher
The Home Baker That Satiates Your Taste With Their Savories
The demand for baked items has steadily increased in the last couple of years. Baked goods offer customers convenience and affordability, and the growing demand has led to a lot of home bakers and chefs venturing into the bakery business. Tapping this growing demand and following the dream of owning a baking business is a Singapore-based brand called “CookieCave CakesCocoon”.
It is a home-based bakery located in Woodlands and was started in 2020 by Juliana Ibrahim. The brand started off selling premium-grade edible raw and bakeable cookie dough using pasteurized eggs and specially prepared amber-formulated flour. They subsequently added baked bread, brownies, and pides (Turkish flat breads) to their product offerings. All their baked goods are on a bake-to-order basis, where the lead time is approximately 2-5 days. Their personalized sweet and savory box with delectable macrons and bakes makes any occasion all the more special. Their niche is all sorts of bread and their sourdough bread, cinnamon rolls, garlic, beef and salmon buns get plenty of repeat orders from customers. Their black pepper beef garlic bun and salmon garlic buns are their signature dishes and most sought-after. All the products are fusion ones that cater to both sweet & savor taste buds and are in the home-based halal products segment.
Kneading The Doughs of Success
She commenced her professional journey in the banking industry, a trajectory she chose to diverge from in 2009 to devote her time to nurturing and raising her young children. Seizing this transitional period, she pursued higher education, obtaining a Master’s degree in 2009 and subsequently completing a PhD in Economics in 2013, all while diligently tending to her familial responsibilities.
In the midst of her academic pursuits, she successfully authored a notable publication, “Convergence in the Asia Pacific” in 2015, aligning with the profound insights gained through her dedicated studies in the field. This achievement marked a significant contribution to the discourse surrounding her specialized area of expertise.
Being a doting mother of four children, Juliana gathered time to roll out her business when the youngest child started primary schooling. She wanted to start her baking business in a home setup gathering a few hours from her house chores so that she could competently manage both responsibilities. One of her friends who tried her homemade bread suggested she try her hands at baking and selling the same. Baking, which was always close to her heart, gave her the courage and will to start her home brand with a modest capital investment around the age of 45 years.
When experience and referrals matter in a business, Juliana’s dedication to baking and her sumptuous flavorful bakes helped her in online promotion over social media handles like Facebook and Instagram. With no marketing allocations or professional photoshoots, she single-handedly managed the end-to-end process. The brand now serves international markets too and with the scaling up of the business, the baking tools, equipment, and physical space also need a revamp. However, Juliana proves her mettle by delivering premium quality in a home-based space.
The Brand’s Growth Story and Vision
The brand that started on a small scale now plays in huge volumes with many repeated orders and corporate orders too. In a span of three years since launch, they have sold approximately 15k+ buns. Customers relish them as much as any burgers or siders because they are not desserts but savories and snacks that can be consumed in meals too. A few years down the line, the brand aims to have a physical store in place and reach out to as many customers as possible through their reasonable pricing and the goodness and taste of baking.
