In a world where bakeries are rapidly modernizing, automating, and chasing trends, traditional bakeries quietly carry something far more precious. Memory. Heritage. Soul. Across Asia, heritage bakeries are experiencing renewed appreciation as younger generations seek authenticity, handmade quality, and flavors rooted in real stories. These businesses do not simply sell pastries. They preserve culture, patience, and craft.
One such story lives in Katong Shopping Centre, where a humble banana pie became a legacy. Auntie Peng Banana Pie is not just a bakery. It is a family story baked over decades, shaped by perseverance, and sustained by generations of loyal customers.
From Dona Manis To A Name Of Her Own.

The story begins in 1989, when Mdm Soh Tho Lang was running Dona Manis. Wanting to create something different from the usual apple pie, she experimented tirelessly in her kitchen. After many trials, and with feedback from customers, friends, and relatives, a unique banana pie was born. Made with fresh bananas, grated coconut, and diced almonds, it quickly became a signature creation.
Over the years, Mdm Soh became lovingly known as Auntie Peng. When her business partner Mr Tan passed away in 2023 and the Dona Manis name was passed on to his daughter, Mdm Soh chose to step away and begin anew, allowing her children to step into the business and continue the legacy alongside her. With more than 30 years of customers calling her Auntie Peng, and the banana pie being her own creation, the brand Auntie Peng Banana Pie was born.
Early Struggles, Hard Lessons, And Honest Growth.

The early days were far from easy. On the first day of sales, only eight slices were sold. Fresh bananas and coconut were difficult to manage, and many batches went to waste due to inexperience in storage and handling. These challenges taught invaluable lessons in production, inventory, and education.
Beyond baking, customers had to be taught how to store the banana pie properly to prevent spoilage. Through patience and consistency, trust was built. Over time, the bakery became known not only for its flavors but for its honesty and care. Every lesson learned strengthened the foundation of what would become a beloved neighborhood institution.
A Family Run Legacy In A Changing World

Located in Katong Shopping Centre, once one of Singapore’s busiest malls, Auntie Peng Banana Pie grew alongside its community. Loyal customers who once visited as children now return with their grandchildren. Seeing third generation customers walk through the door remains one of the business’s most meaningful achievements.
Today, the bakery offers a wide range of handmade pastries including signature banana pies, butter cakes, scones, chocolate tarts, coconut tarts, banana sponge cakes, buttercream cakes, chocolate éclairs, cream puffs, chocolate banana muffins, blueberry crumble, and strawberry sponge cakes. While modern trends influence festive offerings, the old school handmade approach remains unchanged.
With her daughter June Tan, who has been involved in production for over a decade, and her son Hsing Tan stepping in three years ago to support marketing and management, the brand continues to evolve without losing its soul. Roadshows across Singapore now introduce the banana pie to new audiences, proving that even after more than 30 years, there are still new stories left to be discovered.
