Some flavours carry more than taste — they preserve memories, traditions and a sense of home. Family recipes passed down through generations often hold emotional value that cannot be replicated by mass production. For many entrepreneurs, transforming these treasured traditions into a business becomes a way of preserving heritage while sharing meaningful experiences with others.

For Catherine, founder of Shalloty Mama, the journey began with a deeply personal mission: to preserve her mother’s traditional shallots recipe while creating handcrafted products that deliver the same warmth, authenticity and quality she grew up with.

Preserving Authentic Homemade Flavours

Shalloty Mama was established in August 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that inspired many individuals to rediscover meaningful pursuits from home. Motivated by her mother’s homemade shallots recipe, Catherine sought to recreate the authentic flavours she cherished from childhood rather than rely on commercially produced alternatives.

What initially began as a personal passion project gradually evolved into a growing business. Encouraged by the positive response from her children and close friends, Catherine started sharing her handcrafted shallots online, allowing more people to experience the comforting taste of traditional homemade recipes.

Unlike factory-produced alternatives, every batch produced by Shalloty Mama is handcrafted in small quantities to preserve its authentic flavour, aroma and texture. The preparation process remains intentionally meticulous and time intensive, reflecting the brand’s unwavering commitment to quality over mass production.

Balancing Motherhood And Entrepreneurship

Prior to founding Shalloty Mama, Catherine worked in management while raising three children. After the birth of her youngest child, she made the decision to step away from her corporate career to focus on family while pursuing something more meaningful and personally fulfilling from home.

Building the business, however, came with significant challenges. The production process remains highly manual, from carefully peeling and slicing fresh shallots to frying each batch with precision and consistency. Managing the entire operation independently requires considerable dedication, patience and attention to detail.

In addition, fluctuating market conditions continue to impact the sourcing process. Seasonal variations affect the size, quality and pricing of shallots throughout the year, while rising raw material costs have added further pressure over the past several years. Despite these challenges, Catherine remains committed to using premium ingredients and maintaining high production standards rather than compromising product quality. This dedication to craftsmanship and consistency has earned Shalloty Mama strong customer loyalty, with many returning customers appreciating the authenticity and care reflected in every bottle.

Growing Through Community Support

Community support has played a vital role in the growth of Shalloty Mama. Catherine initially introduced her shallots to close friends before gradually expanding through Instagram and word-of-mouth recommendations.

Today, the brand operates primarily through monthly order releases, allowing production to remain carefully managed while ensuring freshness and quality control. Purchase quantities are intentionally limited, reinforcing the brand’s focus on exclusivity, craftsmanship and small batch excellence rather than large scale manufacturing.

Looking ahead, Catherine plans to continue growing the brand thoughtfully while remaining true to its core values of authenticity and handmade quality. In addition to its signature shallots, Shalloty Mama has expanded its offerings to include products such as Garlic-licious (dehydrated garlic chips); Shrimp & Flame (chili); Zesty Pop (tangerine peel powder) and 8pcs Yoshihama Abalones, with plans to further diversify its product range in the future.

For Catherine, Shalloty Mama represents far more than a food business. It is a reflection of family heritage, dedication and the enduring value of preserving authentic homemade flavours through passion, patience and craftsmanship.
